Estevanico: Enslaved African Who Crossed North America Before European Settlement

Estevanico, a Moroccan man who was enslaved, stands out as one of the earliest Africans, Arabic speakers, and Muslims to set foot in what is now the United States, arriving nearly 40 years prior to the establishment of the first European settlement. In 1528, he survived a shipwreck off Texas during the Narváez expedition, which lost 600 crew members. Between 1528 and 1536, he undertook a remarkable journey, walking approximately 2,250 miles from Florida to Mexico's Pacific Coast, marking the first documented traverse of North America. Estevanico was also the initial non-Native American to enter present-day New Mexico and Arizona. Born in Azemmour, Morocco, in the early 1500s, he was enslaved by Spanish nobleman Andrés Dorantes de Carranza. After being captured by the Karankawa people, he served as a translator and mediator for five years, acquiring various Native languages. In 1539, while leading Spanish friars in pursuit of the Seven Cities of Gold, he was killed by the Zuni Pueblo people. His contributions are honored through academic research, museums, and historical monuments, despite the absence of personal written records.
