Edra Soto's 'Screenhouse' installed at McNay Art Museum
In late July, the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio will unveil Edra Soto's 'Screenhouse (2019)', marking it as the museum's inaugural outdoor sculpture created by a Latina artist. Standing at 10 feet tall, this contemporary gazebo is part of Soto's 'GRAFT' series and is made from around 400 charcoal-colored, 12-inch cast concrete blocks. The design draws inspiration from rejas and quiebrasoles—decorative elements frequently seen in residential areas of the Caribbean and the American South. The installation will be enhanced by native San Antonio plants, along with species reminiscent of those from Puerto Rico, providing a communal area for visitors.
