Earthquake in Afghanistan Results in Multiple Fatalities, Including Recently Returned Family

A significant earthquake struck Afghanistan, resulting in multiple casualties and property damage. The seismic event, which occurred on Friday evening, was measured at a magnitude of 5.8 by the United States Geological Survey. Its epicenter was located in the northeastern province of Badakhshan, at a considerable depth. Official reports from Afghan authorities and the Afghan Red Crescent Society confirmed that the disaster led to twelve fatalities and four injuries. Among the deceased were eight individuals from a single family who had recently returned to Afghanistan after living in Iran. This family was residing in temporary shelter on the outskirts of Kabul when a structural collapse caused their deaths; a young child from the family survived. The earthquake caused significant structural damage across several provinces, with reports indicating the complete destruction of five homes and partial damage to thirty-three others, affecting approximately forty households. The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of populations in the region to natural disasters, particularly those in precarious living situations.
