Documentary 'Spray Can Stories' Explores Bronx Graffiti Culture and Hip-Hop Origins

Emmitt H Thrower, an award-winning filmmaker, has directed a documentary titled 'Spray Can Stories' that examines graffiti culture in the Bronx and its connection to hip-hop. The film includes interviews with Tats Cru members BG 183 and Nicer, tracing the evolution of graffiti from local street art to commercial work for major brands. Thrower was inspired by his move to the Bronx and the democratic nature of the art form. The production received funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs via the Bronx Council on the Arts, supplemented by personal contributions. The documentary has garnered award nominations and will premiere in New York City on January 11, 2026, at La Nacional in Manhattan, with additional screenings scheduled through January 18 at various venues in Manhattan and the Bronx. Thrower aims to educate a broad audience about the origins and impact of this American art movement.
