Documentary Reveals Correct Pronunciation of Henry David Thoreau's Name

A new PBS documentary about Henry David Thoreau has revealed that the common pronunciation of the author's surname is incorrect. While filming the documentary, actor Jeff Goldblum was corrected when he pronounced the name as "Thu-RO" with emphasis on the second syllable. According to John J. Kucich, co-president of the Thoreau Alliance, the proper pronunciation places emphasis on the first syllable, making it "THU-ro," similar to the word "thorough." The three-part documentary, which premieres on March 30, is produced by filmmaker Ken Burns and musician Don Henley, who chairs the Walden Woods Project. The film explores Thoreau's time at Walden Pond and examines his broader impact on American culture and philosophy, addressing themes such as industrialization, slavery, environmental concerns, and individual rights. Directors Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers were also unaware of the correct pronunciation until an expert informed them during production. The documentary aims to provide a comprehensive look at Thoreau's life and legacy, highlighting his writings and engagement with social issues.
