Diana Wilkins Discusses Creativity and Social Justice in Debbie Millman's Interview Series

Diana Wilkins, a social justice advocate and writer, participated in Debbie Millman's ongoing interview project "What Matters," which explores the inner lives of creative professionals. Now in its third year, the project invites respondents to answer ten identical questions and provide a personal photograph. Wilkins has extensive experience in program development, leadership, education, and training. She has been involved in campaigns for Marriage Equality and GENDA in New York, teaches college-level literature and writing, works with Social Justice Initiatives, LLC, and is employed full-time at the Center for Safety & Change, where she supports victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other crimes. She is currently writing a memoir. In the interview, Wilkins shared that her greatest joy comes from creative expression and promoting social change. Her first creative memory was attending a poetry reading at age 16, which inspired her to start writing poetry. She discussed processing the death of her sister through her memoir, her methods for coping with heartbreak through writing and reflection, and her belief in reincarnation and energy after death. Wilkins expressed pride in her compassion, openness, and emotional depth, and noted that she does not hate anything about herself. Her favorite meal is tacos with a margarita or beer.
