publication · 2026-03-29

Design Observer has compiled a reading list for Black History Month featuring works by Black authors addressing inclusion in design. The list includes Kevin Bethune's 'Reimagining Design: Unlocking Strategic Innovation' (MIT Press, 2022), which details his career journey through corporate America, and his upcoming book 'Nonlinear: Navigating Design with Curiosity and Conviction' (MIT Press, February 2025). Charlene Prempeh, founder of A Vibe Called Tech, authored 'Now You See Me: An Introduction to 100 Years of Black Design' (Prestel, 2024), examining a century of Black contributions across design fields. Kaleena Sales curated 'Centered: People and Ideas Diversifying Design' (Princeton Architectural Press, 2023), a collection highlighting underrepresented design perspectives. Omari Souza, founder of the State of Black Design Conference, will release 'Design Against Racism: Creating Work That Transforms Communities' (Princeton Architectural Press, 2025), advocating for restorative design principles. Souza also co-edited 'An Anthology of Blackness: The State of Black Design' (MIT Press, 2023) with Terresa Moses, featuring essays from Black design professionals. Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall, dean at OCAD University, authored 'Decolonizing Design: A Cultural Justice Guidebook' (MIT Press, 2023, updated 2026), which critiques colonial influences in design. Proceeds from book sales support local booksellers and Design Observer's editorial programs.
