Denmark’s largest Viking silver hoard found in Rebild garden

A significant discovery of Denmark’s largest known Viking Age silver hoard has been made in a garden in Rebild, northern Denmark, as reported by North Jutland Museums. While digging a terrace, the unnamed individual found a clay container filled with 700 items, including silver bars, bracelets, 47 complete coins and fragments, a Thor’s hammer, and cut silver. The total weight of the hoard is approximately 18.5kg, which is three times heavier than the Terslev Hoard (6.5kg). Archaeologist Torben Sarauw emphasized its “exceptionally important” nature, highlighting its value in understanding the Viking silver economy. Some coins feature Arabic inscriptions, and one bar may have runes reading “hutu.” The hoard, buried during a transformative era for the Danish kingdom, will be displayed at Fyrkat after documentation.
