Deadly Violence in Nigeria's Plateau State Following Bar Attack

A violent incident occurred in central Nigeria's Plateau state on Sunday, resulting in multiple fatalities. Unidentified assailants opened fire at a bar-restaurant establishment in the Anguwan Rukuba neighborhood within Jos North district. According to Plateau state Red Cross secretary Nurudeen Hussaini Magaji, at least 12 individuals lost their lives in the initial shooting. Following this attack, retaliatory mob violence erupted, with groups targeting people in the area. Mangalle Idris, a local youth leader, reported that the mob attacked both passersby and business operators, resulting in additional deaths. While official figures indicate three fatalities from the retaliatory violence, other sources suggest higher numbers. The total death toll from both incidents reached 27 people. This violence occurred in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, where Plateau state has experienced recurring conflicts often connected to disputes over land between agricultural and pastoral communities. Although Jos has witnessed sectarian conflicts historically, mass casualty attacks within the crowded urban center have been uncommon in recent years.
