Das Margareten Theater Reopens as Community Venue in Vienna's Margareten District

cultural-heritage · 2026-03-30

Nadja Puttner and Jasmin Avissar have taken over the performance space previously known as Volx Margareten, renaming it Das Margareten. The venue is located in the basement of the Eisenbahnerheim building at Margaretenstraße 166 in Vienna's Margareten district. This space has a rich history: originally serving as a meeting hall for union leaders, it later functioned as a cinema before becoming a theater venue in 1991. From 1991 onward, the space was used by the Volkstheater as both a rehearsal stage and performance venue, operating under names including Volkstheater im Hundsturm and Volx Margareten. The newly renamed Das Margareten represents a fresh start for this underground theater space, which was originally designed to accommodate 270 people. The takeover marks a new chapter for this cultural location that has served various community functions throughout its history.
