Dani Karavan's 'Pasajes' Memorial Honors Walter Benjamin in Portbou

Dani Karavan created 'Pasajes,' a sculptural memorial for Walter Benjamin in Portbou, Catalonia, Spain, fifty years after the philosopher's death. Benjamin, a German Jewish literary critic and philosopher, died by suicide on September 26, 1940, while fleeing Nazism across the Pyrenees from France to Spain. The memorial, embedded in a cliff on the Costa Brava, consists of a steel intervention that functions as a staircase, tomb, tunnel, and passageway overlooking the dark sea. Karavan, who died in 2021, was known for large-scale environmental artworks engaging with memory, exile, and landscape. The work references Benjamin's unfinished magnum opus, 'El libro de los pasajes' (1983), which examined the material culture of 19th-century capitalism and urban experience. Benjamin's body was initially buried in the adjacent cemetery, built around 1900, after being registered as 'Benjamin Walter,' allowing a Catholic burial. The site is characterized by the fierce tramontana wind, which can reach 200 kilometers per hour. The memorial does not seek to commemorate but to reflect on tragedy, honoring both Benjamin and anonymous exiles.
