Court delays decision on Beuys bronze grave monument dispute

A legal dispute over a Joseph Beuys bronze sculpture on a family grave in Kranenburg, Germany, has been postponed after the plaintiff proposed mediation. The Düsseldorf Administrative Court session was adjourned when Marecellina van der Grinten, representing one faction of the divided heirs, requested a mediation process involving all heirs and a court-appointed neutral mediator. The conflict centers on whether the artwork, part of the "Grabmal Familie van der Grinten" listed as a protected monument since 2009, should remain on the cemetery or be moved to the Heimat-Museum Katharinenhof. The municipality of Kranenburg supports the relocation, citing public interest and protection against theft of bronze figures from cemeteries. The opposing heirs, including van der Grinten, argue the sculpture is a public landmark and should stay. The bronze dates from 1961 and reflects Beuys' long friendship with brothers Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten, avid collectors whose extensive Beuys collection is now housed at Museum Moyland. Court spokesperson Stefanie Rosarius noted the unusual nature of the case, where citizens sue against a permit rather than a prohibition. The judge found the municipality's theft-prevention argument plausible.
