Cloned Giant Sequoias Planted in Detroit for Species Preservation

Conservation groups and volunteers are planting hundreds of cloned giant sequoia saplings throughout Detroit, Michigan. The initiative involves organizations like Archangel Ancient Tree Archive and Arboretum Detroit, using genetic material from ancient California trees including the Amos Alonzo Stagg specimen. This pilot project aims to preserve the genetics of these massive trees, expand urban green spaces, and create backup populations as wildfires threaten native groves in California. The young trees are intended to provide environmental benefits such as shade, pollution filtration, and carbon storage as they mature.
