Clarence Heyward Self-Portrait Vandalized at Houston Museum of African American Culture

In May 2026, "Man in the Garden" (2025), a self-portrait by artist Clarence Heyward, was deliberately vandalized at the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC). The Houston Police Department is currently looking into a report of criminal mischief made on May 21, involving two individuals spotted near the museum, with one suspected of damaging the artwork; however, no arrests have been made. John Guess, Jr., HMAAC CEO Emeritus, denounced violence as a reaction to differing opinions. The museum has paused restoration efforts and put the damaged piece back on display, emphasizing the consequences of destructive disagreement. Heyward, whose work is featured in the EDEN exhibition, shared his disappointment but refrained from discussing the motives behind the act. HMAAC CEO Davinia Reed affirmed that attempts to intimidate or silence will not hinder the museum's objectives. Notably, HMAAC is Texas's only African American culture museum without public funding.
