Cineteca di Bologna's 1997 Bertolucci Retrospective Revisited

In the summer of 1997, the Cineteca di Bologna organized a film series titled 'Complotto di famiglia' (Family Plot), a Hitchcockian reference, held in the courtyard of Palazzo d'Accursio. The retrospective honored the Bertolucci family, a unique dynasty in Italian culture: father Attilio Bertolucci, a major 20th-century poet, art historian, and prose writer; and his sons Bernardo and Giuseppe, both filmmakers who masterfully explored history and psychology. Bernardo moved from grand scenarios to minimal episodes, while Giuseppe started from small, seemingly anonymous events toward broader dimensions. The series revived much of the brothers' filmographies, highlighting their differences and shared intellectual reflection.
