Chicago Aquarium Successfully Raises Rare Warty Frogfish in Captivity

The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has achieved a significant milestone by successfully raising a warty frogfish, known as Domino, from birth in captivity, marking the first known instance for this species. This event occurred recently at the aquarium's Wild Reef habitat, where aquarists observed a female warty frogfish release eggs last fall, which were then fertilized by a male. Among thousands of larvae, only one survived to become a juvenile, a common outcome due to high larval mortality rates. Domino, now less than half an inch in size, has transitioned from a translucent larva to a colorful juvenile with yellow and orange hues, feeding on brine shrimp from the aquarium's live foods program. Experts, including senior aquarist Jenny Richards, highlight the importance of this achievement for future captive breeding efforts, especially in light of climate change and ocean challenges. The fish is learning natural behaviors like 'walking' with modified fins, as noted by senior aquarist Kayla Melton Rogala. While Domino remains off public display for monitoring, the adult warty frogfish are viewable in the exhibit. This success could inspire conservation efforts and enhance techniques for rearing other marine species, as emphasized by aquarium spokeswoman Elise Mulligan. The Wild Reef exhibit, opened in 2003, simulates a Philippine coral reef and houses various marine life.
