Chamonix's Musée du Mont-Blanc Reopens After Five-Year Renovation

After five years of closure and €8.6 million in renovations, the Musée du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix has reopened, rebranded from its former name 'Musée alpin'. The museum, housed in a Belle Époque former palace, now spans 900 square meters—double its previous size—thanks to reconfiguration and expansion into adjacent municipal spaces. The new permanent exhibition focuses on the human relationship with the mountain, featuring a detailed map, a three-century chronology of the valley, and sections on territorial development, mountaineering history, and artistic depictions of Mont Blanc. Highlights include a sedan chair used during Napoleon III's visit, a copper model of the Cosmiques refuge, and the walking stick of Jacques Balmat from the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786. A dedicated fine arts section showcases works by local artist Georgette Agutte (1867-1922) and mountaineer-painter Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913). Architect Guillaume Girod of Spaces Architecture restored the original double heights and a rotonde destroyed in the 1930s, now a play area. The museum aims to attract 40,000 visitors annually, double its pre-2021 attendance. New features include an audiovisual lounge on climate change research and a temporary exhibition space. Director Gabrielle Michaux emphasized the rebranding to leverage Mont Blanc's international recognition and clarify the museum's focus.
