Carnac's New Mayor Halts Prehistory Museum Construction Project

Alexandre Lanoë, the newly elected mayor of Carnac, has suspended a major museum construction project shortly after taking office. The initiative, which began in 2020 under former mayor Olivier Lepick's administration, aimed to build a 20 million euro facility designed by the Parisian architecture firm Projectiles. Planned features included a 3,200 square meter space with a 16-meter granite structure inspired by local menhirs, intended to serve as an architectural landmark at the town's entrance. The project was scheduled to start groundwork in late March 2026, but was halted on March 28, just two days after the election, preventing significant financial commitments. Public subsidies were to cover 52% of the costs, with the remainder funded locally. The decision reflects a shift away from large-scale cultural infrastructure in favor of reconfiguring the existing museum, housed in a 19th-century presbytery spanning 1,100 square meters. That museum currently attracts 35,000 to 40,000 annual visitors but displays only a small fraction of its 350,000-item collection, primarily from megalithic excavations. The new administration prioritizes public services and sustainable mobility, citing budgetary sobriety. Previously, opposition councilor Pierre Léon Luneau challenged the project legally, but the administrative court in Rennes dismissed the case in February 2025, finding no procedural errors. Carnac, with 4,500 residents and nearly 800,000 tourists yearly, is home to renowned Neolithic alignments, raising questions about adequately showcasing its archaeological heritage.
