Britannicus: The Forgotten Son of Emperor Claudius and His Tragic Fate

Britannicus, the son of Roman Emperor Claudius and his third wife Messalina, was born on February 12, AD 41, just weeks after Claudius ascended to power. Named to celebrate the conquest of Britain, he was initially the presumed heir. However, after Messalina's downfall and Claudius's marriage to Agrippina the Younger, Britannicus's fate changed. Agrippina maneuvered to have her own son, Nero, adopted and elevated as heir, pushing Britannicus aside. Nero became emperor in AD 54 after Claudius's death, and soon after, Britannicus was poisoned, dying before his 14th birthday.
