Botanical Expedition to Norfolk Island Uncovers New Plant Species and Invasive Threats

A scientific team from the Australian Institute of Botanical Science conducted a research trip to Norfolk Island, located approximately 1,600 kilometers northeast of Sydney. During this expedition, the group gathered around 400 plant specimens, including approximately 160 bryophytes. Their work led to the identification of several plant species new to the island, such as Oxalis pes-caprae (Soursob), Soliva anthemifolia (Button Burweed), and Hypochaeris albiflora (White Flatweed), along with a potentially new fern in the Blechnum genus. The mission aimed to address gaps in botanical records and assess invasive weeds that pose risks to local ecosystems. Collaboration with community groups, the Australian Museum, Parks Australia, and the Auckland War Memorial Museum supported the survey. Collected specimens are being digitized and preserved for future research and conservation efforts.
