Biography Reclaims Cecilia Böhl Larrea, the Contradictory Pioneer Behind Fernán Caballero

A new biography by professor Marieta Cantos reexamines the life and work of Cecilia Böhl Larrea, the 19th-century Spanish writer who published under the male pseudonym Fernán Caballero. Born in Morges, Switzerland in 1796 and dying in Seville in 1877, Böhl Larrea was a pioneering woman of letters, an enlightened bourgeois, deeply conservative and Catholic, who advanced the realist movement and achieved great success in her time. Cantos argues that Böhl Larrea was ideologically conservative but literarily innovative and modern, a famous intellectual of her era whose work has since lost relevance and recognition. The biography aims to counter this neglect, highlighting the contradictions of a writer who had to take refuge in a male pseudonym to succeed.
