Bayeux Tapestry Arrives at British Museum for Historic Loan Exhibition

On July 10, 2026, the Bayeux Tapestry, a medieval embroidery measuring 70 meters and dating back to around 1070-1080, reached the British Museum in London following a discreet and secure transport. This exhibition represents the first time it will be showcased in Great Britain in nearly a millennium. The loan was revealed by French President Emmanuel Macron in July 2025, with the intention of enhancing cultural ties between France and Britain in the aftermath of Brexit. It will be exhibited flat in the Sainsbury Gallery from September 10, 2026, until July 11, 2027. The UK covered the transfer costs and allocated £800 million for potential damages. Concerns about its condition emerged, highlighted by a 2020 report citing 24,000 stains and 30 tears. The tapestry is scheduled to return to Bayeux in 2027 for display in a newly renovated museum.
