Autun's Ancient Rampart Reconstruction Unblocked After 15-Year Legal Dispute

After fifteen years of legal disputes, the reconstruction of a section of Autun's Gallo-Roman rampart on Boulevard Mac-Mahon can finally proceed. The administrative court of Dijon ruled on June 25 that the wall is an 'accessory to the public road,' making the city responsible as manager of this public work. Three of five decisions are now final, providing a legal basis for reconstruction. The wall section collapsed on December 6, 2010, and was deemed fragile due to modifications and lack of drainage. In March 2020, an expert warned of 'very imminent and particularly dangerous peril.' The dispute involved Renaud Abord de Châtillon, owner of the adjacent Hôtel d'Eguilly, who contested ownership. In 2018, the court suspended proceedings to determine ownership, and on November 5, 2025, the judicial court of Lyon ruled the wall did not belong to him. The administrative court also ordered the state, the city, and architect Frédéric Didier to pay €123,000 to Abord de Châtillon for loss of enjoyment and moral damages. The complexity stems from multiple owners of rampart parcels. The state intervened in April 2020, funding €100,000 in emergency stabilization. The ruling allows the city to start rebuilding this protected historical monument.
