Australian Museum Uncovers 1925 Ancient Egypt Lecture Slides for Ramses Exhibition

The Australian Museum's Photographic Archives team has discovered lantern slides from a 1925 lecture series on Ancient Egypt, delivered by ethnologist William Walford Thorpe. These slides, created by G. C. Clutton from publication photographs, include images of museum artifacts such as the 'Yellow coffin from Akhmim,' which is currently exhibited. The find coincides with the upcoming Ramses & The Gold of The Pharaohs Exhibition, highlighting historical public interest in Egyptology, spurred by events like the 1922 Tutankhamun tomb discovery. The museum's Egyptian collection, largely amassed from the 1880s to 1930s, features over 1,000 objects, with some on display in its galleries.
