Australian Museum Study Reveals Land Snail Survival After 2019-2020 Bushfires

Researchers from the Australian Museum and University of New South Wales conducted a study examining the effects of the 2019-2020 wildfires on land snails in northeastern New South Wales. The investigation focused on 26 snail species in Gondwanan rainforests, surveying 70 sites to assess survival rates. Contrary to initial concerns, the team found live specimens for all target species, confirming their persistence after the fires. However, three species were identified as being of conservation concern, and seven were classified as near threatened due to habitat impacts. The findings were published in a research article, highlighting both positive outcomes and ongoing vulnerabilities for these endemic invertebrates.
