Australian Museum Expedition Studies Endangered Bird Species on Norfolk Island

In October 2022, Australian Museum scientists Emily Cave and Dr Richard Major conducted research on Norfolk Island to examine endemic and introduced bird populations. The expedition aimed to gather biological data to address conservation questions, using mist-nets to capture birds safely for measurements and genetic sampling. The team documented several native species including the Slender-Billed White-Eye, Norfolk Island Robin, Golden Whistler, and Gerygone. They engaged with local communities through events and collaborated with residents like Margaret Christian of the Flora and Fauna Society. Collected specimens will support ongoing studies of taxonomy and evolution, adding contemporary samples to the museum's historical collections dating back to the 1880s.
