Australian Museum Celebrates Kiribati Independence with Cultural Exchange and Collection Review

The Australian Museum marked Kiribati's Independence Day on July 12 by hosting a delegation from the Pacific nation in June. Kiribati's Minister for Internal Affairs Hon. Boutu Bwateriki, Permanent Secretary Toani Barao, and Kiribati Museum Director Marii Irata visited the institution to examine its extensive collection of over 700 Kiribati artifacts. The group toured the Pasifika Collection, providing cultural context and traditional names for items including body armor, mats, fishing gear, and weapons. Director Irata noted the rarity of many pieces and expressed hope to revive traditional practices through cultural programs. The visit facilitated knowledge exchange that will enhance the museum's records of these cultural objects.
