Australian Museum Archives Mark International Archives Week with Digitization Project

cultural-heritage · 2026-03-24

The Australian Museum is participating in International Archives Week (June 5-9) and International Archives Day (June 9), which commemorate the 75th anniversary of the International Council on Archives. The museum's Archives department preserves institutional records including Trust Minutes, Annual Reports, Collection Registers, correspondence, and photography. Through the Photographic Archives Digitization (PAD) Project, the team is converting analog photography collections to digital formats, uncovering historical images of the museum building, scientific expeditions, exhibitions, and surrounding streets. These archives serve to maintain accountability, document decisions, and connect present to past through various photographic formats like 35mm negatives, glass plates, and lantern slides.
