Art UK Documents Over 6,600 Murals in National Digitization Project

Art UK, a charitable organization, has concluded a significant national initiative to digitally record murals and street art throughout the United Kingdom. The Murals Digitisation and Engagement Programme, which commenced in January 2024, has documented more than 6,600 artworks, increasing the total count of outdoor public pieces in the charity's online archive to over 21,000. This endeavor, primarily financed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, covers locations from Kirkwall in Orkney to Penzance in Cornwall. It encompasses a wide range of works, from historical church paintings to modern murals created as recently as 2025. Notable examples include a large abstract mosaic in Gosport, Hampshire, and a small depiction on a utility box in Aberdeen. According to Art UK, approximately 19% of the murals serve commemorative purposes, 23% feature animals, and 11% relate to local heritage and industry. Other themes addressed include environmental issues, nature, and social unity. The project heavily depends on about 90 public art volunteers, many of whom were initially engaged in 2017 through a collaboration with the Royal Photographic Society to photograph public sculptures. Katey Goodwin, the deputy chief executive, noted that volunteers contributed nearly 5,500 hours over two years, often identifying additional artworks beyond their assigned tasks. Andrew Ellis, the chief executive, praised the volunteers for creating an invaluable record of this accessible art form. The initiative aligns with a growing trend of mural creation in the UK, where street art is increasingly commissioned for urban renewal. Scotty Irving of Brave Arts highlighted the public value of street art in sharing authentic narratives. Art UK intends to continue the project through 2026, expanding to include interior murals and developing educational materials.
