Ancient Romanian Golden Helmet Recovered After Dutch Museum Heist

In January 2025, thieves broke into the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, by using a crowbar to open a door and then detonating an explosion to breach a wall. Their target was the Cotofenesti helmet, a 2,500-year-old golden artifact from the Dacia civilization dating to the 5th–4th centuries BCE, which was on loan from Romania's National Museum of Romanian History for the exhibition 'Dacia: Kingdom of Gold and Silver.' The helmet, along with two of three stolen golden bracelets from the first century BCE, was recovered and announced at a press conference in Assen, where police officers wore balaclavas. Three suspects were apprehended shortly after the theft. Corien Fahner of the prosecution service expressed relief, describing the situation as a 'roller coaster' for both Romanian cultural officials and museum staff. Initial reactions included Harry Tupan, then director of the Drents Museum, calling it a 'pitch dark day,' while Ernest Oberlander-Tarnoveanu, director of Romania's National History Museum, said the heist exceeded their 'most pessimistic dreams.' Concerns had been raised by Dutch art theft expert Arthur Brand, who feared the unique helmet might be melted down for its gold, valued at approximately $89,000 per kilogram. Robert van Langh, the current Drents Museum director, noted the helmet's symbolic protective eyes in the recovery announcement. The artifact was in the final weekend of its six-month loan when stolen, drawing international media attention.
