Perched in the Lepontine Alps above Lake Maggiore, the Alpe Colle bookstore operates as Italy's highest-altitude library. Founded in 2014 at an alpine pasture called Alpe Colle, this cultural project combats the demographic decline affecting Italian mountain regions. The journey begins in Piancavallo, leading hikers through beech forests with panoramic lake views. Within an hour's walk, visitors reach a small plateau nestled between Val Grande National Park and valleys descending to the lake. The store houses thousands of titles, including out-of-print books, used volumes, rare editions, antique texts, and first editions, attracting collectors, hikers, and curious readers. Beyond commerce, it serves as a community hub where people share aperitifs, snacks, and local products like craft beers and cheeses. The surrounding trail passes Monte Morissolo, featuring preserved fortifications from the Cadorna Line, a World War I defensive system built to protect the Swiss border. Military galleries and the panoramic "three crosses" viewpoint offer vistas across nearly all of Lake Maggiore. A flat path then returns through the forest, reaching Alpe Colle in about thirty minutes.
