2500-Year-Old Princely Tomb Discovered in Italy Sheds Light on Little-Known Pre-Roman Picene People
Excavations by the Superintendence of Archaeology in Sirolo, Italy, have unveiled a princely tomb complex dating back to the 6th century BCE, as announced on July 1, 2026. Led by ArcheoLab, this discovery sheds light on the Picene civilization. Within the main tomb, archaeologists found a high-ranking warrior accompanied by military gear, such as a chariot, alongside artifacts like a bronze oinochoe and a diphros. A nearby female burial contained elite textiles and an amber brooch. The site, encircled by a circular palisade, also revealed large bronze vessels that held remnants of a funerary feast. This discovery, located near earlier tombs, underscores the organization and trade networks of the Picene elite prior to Roman expansion.
